As on the album, Mr. Cardenas had the momentous benefit of steady partners: Ben Allison on bass and Rudy Royston on drums. In their first set all three musicians expressed what felt like an corresponding stake in the songs, and an aversion to the common hierarchy of a jazz guitar trio. Their rapport was sturdy and pliable, radical in deep familiarity. (Under different circumstances these musicians form the core of Mr. Allison’s working affiliate.)

Mr. Cardenas has a flinty touch on electric guitar, and he doesn’t mess around much with effects, favoring a consistent detrain-brackish tone.
