Final Note Curt Warren's Guitar Gets Its Licks In what's up

Patently showing age, but the color hasn�t completely gone. You can tell that the hard knocks of life have taken their assessment, but there�s a lot of music bouncing around in that old body. No, not El Paso jazzer Curt Warren�s body � his guitar�s, a 1950s Gibson ES 175D made in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Warren has lit up the El Paso jazz milieu with it for decades.

I was doing some repair work on the guitar, and peering into the body I thought, �Hey, I�m looking at El Paso music information. Think of the zillions of notes that have floated around inside here.�

I had a great view inside from the quarter-sized recess on the edge of the body where the cord plugs in to go to the amplifier. Looking into an old guitar like that reminds me of a big empty cafeteria-sized lodge, a lonely place, waiting for the next buzz of activity.

Exposed beams, ducts and wiring, a room from the 1940s or 50s. I�ve been in that chamber, I can picture it, I can even smell it, but I don�t remember where
